A steel detailer is a person responsible for producing detailed drawings that are required by steel fabricators. The detailer produces detailed plans and documents for the fabrication and erection of the steel members like trusses, beams, columns, handrails, and joists. A steel detailer mainly produces two types of drawings including shop drawings and erection drawings for steel members.

What are shop drawings?

Shop Drawings are the engineering drawings that are used for specifying exact detailing specification to fabricate individual steel member. Steel detailing was initially carried out using manual methods like the pencil, paper, and drafting tools. Handheld calculators were the only machines then. But today the scenario is different. Computer-aided design or CAD has taken over the manual drafting methods.

A steel detailer uses software for producing the required drawings and then it is printed on paper once they are completed. 3D modeling the widely used concept today which enables steel detailers to provide a better visualization os steel structures being detailed. After creating a 3D model for steel members, all other drawings are produced automatically.
