Acoustic Shells West Sussex UK - SiliconInfo

Standing still in the submerged garden with the promise of sheltering the passer by and staging the performers, Acoustic Shell has rejuvenated one of the old social cultures. Located in the sunken garden alongside beach in Little Hampton of West Sussex in UK, It was designed by Flanagan Lawrence, who has won the project in 2012. The concept of Acoustic Shells has inspired from the traditional bandstand. The need of the bandstand increases with need of green space as people can sit and relax. Along with the sitting and relaxing it also use as stage for local performers. The construction has started from 2012 and completed in 2014. It is considered as best building of 2015 in public architecture.

The basic shape represent the “sound” which explains the name i.e. Acoustic Shell. Due its shape the sound reflects within the shell and creates a louder and impactful sound. There are two shells facing back to each other. One is facing towards sunken garden while the other shell utilizes for musical performance, is facing towards sea. It was created without any framework and the concrete was sprayed directly on reinforcement mesh. Majority of the concrete is 100 mm thick which was supported by double curved geometry to extend the stage.  The Acoustic Shell seems like a white land emerging from grass covered ground. It surely holds a historical significance by reviving the old social culture.
